When I hear the phrase “Drone Police” my brain immediately pulls images from some of the famous Science Fiction movies. Well, it seems like someone in Japan thinks that drones today can be so dangerous that forming a drone police squad is necessary…

The police department in Tokyo is preparing to deploy unmanned net-carrying drones to catch “rogue” drones. The need for these new police drones is somewhat dictated by the new Japanese regulations that restrict drone flights into restricted airspace near and above government buildings.  These new regulations came into place after a drone with minute traces of radiation landed on the roof of the prime minister’s office back in April. “Terrorist attacks using drones carrying explosives are a possibility,” a senior officer in Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police Department told Asahi Shimbun.

The new police drones will be equipped with cameras and a “catch” net that measures approximately 10 x 6 feet. Using the catch net the police drone operators will be able to chase and catch offending drones. It is actually quite interesting and “cool”. Here is a video released by the Japanese news service “Jiji Press”:

The police drones are scheduled to enter service sometime this month, according to Asahi Shimbun and the Kyodo news service.

Interesting times are upon us…
